[Marketing] review: component 1 branding and online style guide

The next component that is ready for review is Component 1 - branding and online style guide.

The expected deliverables here are:

• Vector material (svg, ink, eps…) and images
• 5 logo options with feedback from OSGeo stakeholders (see below);
• Online Style Guide (PDF version may also be considered)

The first two deliverables have already been accepted by us, and have been used to drive component 1 and component 3 activities.

The last deliverable is located here:

Please review, we can make a motion to accept when ready.

I’ve had a quick review of the PDF Style Guide. Here are my comments:

  • Can the Point of Truth for this Style Guide please be provided in an Open format such that we can easily maintain it in future. Potential formats: RST, OpenOffice, HTML.

* Re: “The OSGeo primary logo … MUST appear on all of our communications.”

I suggest this should be changed to “The OSGeo primary logo … SHOULD appear on all of OSGEO’s OFFICIAL communications.”

Note: “Communication” is a very broad term, and could include project email lists, skype calls, etc.

* Re: “NEVER tamper with the elements of the logo or any of its elements.”

This advise conflicts with sub-brand advice where the logo is changed. I think we should explain the process for applying to change the logo, and guidelines for what is or is not acceptable, and the process for applying to create a sub brand.

Also, I suggest say “SHOULD” instead of “NEVER”. We are not sure of all future uses of this guide, and we should leave room for creative flair and common sense of our community (who should be continuing to consult with the Marketing committee, as has been done in the past).

  • I assume the selected typeface is Open? (Apparently the last one was not open). If it is open, we should state this in the guide, probably with a link to where this is explained, so that future people can easily work this out.

* “Explainnation about using Google Webfonts in CSS/HTML”

This statement seems to be a forgotten TODO?

  • Re “Secondary Palette”

I suggest adding a sentence explaining why you might want to use a secondary palette.

  • “Keep some space between logo and text”

I suggest suggesting how much space (which might be a range).

  • Can we please create Presentation templates, in particular, for Powerpoint, Google Slides, and reveal.js - a JS powerpoint format, as used by OSGeo-Live and others: http://live.osgeo.org/en/presentation/index.html#/

  • The Social Media section has a nice variant of the logo - we should include this variant in the examples for Subbrands.

Cheers, Cameron

Think we are porting this to html for the website Cameron, Jeffrey Johnson had a volunteer lined up. We asked specifically for these files to be provided as written, so we would have the original to port from.

* Re: “The OSGeo primary logo … MUST appear on all of our communications.”

I suggest this should be changed to “The OSGeo primary logo … SHOULD appear on all of OSGEO’s OFFICIAL communications.”

I do not mind the specific communication here. Using the brand is one way to identify the communication as official.

* Re: “NEVER tamper with the elements of the logo or any of its elements.”

This advise conflicts with sub-brand advice where the logo is changed. I think we should explain the process for applying to change the logo, and guidelines for what is or is not acceptable, and the process for applying to create a sub brand.

Think we may have a conflict of expectations: the instructions are being provided for use of the osgeo logo to represent osgeo.
Use of a sub brand (or a distinct brand) to represent one of our communities is on a later page.

  • I assume the selected typeface is Open? (Apparently the last one was not open). If it is open, we should state this in the guide, probably with a link to where this is explained, so that future people can easily work this out.

It is open, the fonts were provided in github: https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/tree/master/marketing/branding/fonts

Cameron that is covered under component 3, and yes I created powerpoint, keynote and open document templates. Importing the power point template into google slides worked for the AGM.

https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/tree/master/marketing/collateral/presentation

But once again this is a component 3 deliverable, for component 1 we are just looking at how the branding can be applied.

Thanks for the careful review cameron, I have captured your feedback as a bug ticket here:

So the ball for this is currently in Pim’s court, we were able to supply the missing cartography image - with the delivery of a revised style guide we should be able to make a motion to accept component 1.

Cameron with respect to your feedback, we need a discussion to resolve your concerns about wording, do you want to handle this on email, the bug tracker or a breakout meeting?

  1. We slightly tweaked the wording in last week’s meeting to be clear about changing the osgeo logo, vs creating a sub brand logo - but that may or may not be sufficient to address your concerns.

  2. We are sticking with requiring the OSGeo logo on official communication, I considered changing the word from “official communication” to “official correspondence” but I do not think that adds benefit. As per the meeting if require the use of the logo we will see it in use far more often then if it is only a suggestion.

Cameron can you review again please: https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/blob/master/marketing/branding/styleguide-osgeo.pdf

The only suggestions I have are around providing background information that would help our members understand what they are looking at (for things like secondary colors, or sub brands, or distinct brands).

Secondary colors, making a note that these are available for use in cartography and diagrams to provide a consistent look.

An example of the sub brand template use, to avoid things like this: http://www.osgeo.org/sites/osgeo.org/files/osgeo_logo.png where alignment is off.
