I don’t see any negatives in showing an ORCID.
The change I see is adding a new ORCID item to the ’social media icons’ dropdown on the user profile page, since a freeform ORCID address can already be added.
Is that a hard change, or an easy change?
…relatedly but off-topic, does OSGeo.org use a child theme structure or custom theme such that bespoke changes survive wordpress updates?

Our theme is in git.osgeo.org as a private www_osgeo repository. Join the system admin committee if you would like to work on fixes and enhancements 
The issue tracker for website theme enhancements is trac.osgeo.org (there are some open issues already)

We have a test instance where changes can be checked before being rolled
out the main site. Vicky and Regina (SAC) can help out with testing the
idea.
