Hi there,
I'm doing oil spreading simulation (using GRASS, of course) in coastal area and would appreciate any references for oil spreading and oil polution on the sea. BTW, I'm wondering if anyone out there in the GRASS world is working on related applications. A> ny help will be very much appreciated.
We did a study in San Francisco Bay looking at potential oil spill effects
on habitat. We used a proprietary oil spill dispersion/diffusion
LaGrangian model. The output was a datafile containing the x,y
coordinates of the LeGrangian Elements (le's) at each time step (5
minutes for most of our runs); there were about 300 to 1000 le's for
each run, depending on the spill magnitude.
We used GRASS to analyze these in several ways. By converting to a
site file (an easy awk) we could demonstrate maximum extent of spill
at any time t, locate beached and/or imobilized oil, estimate degree
of oiling (number of elements passing through a cell in time
interval), correlate spill time with containment response time, and
evaluate potential habitat impacts. In addition, we aggregated
multiple runs, using different scenarios of location, tide and wind,
material, and magnitude to generate probability surfaces using
s.surf.tps. These were used to prioritize mitigation and response
activities.
