WHAT IS THE OPEN GEODATA INTEROPERABILITY
SPECIFICATION?

The Open GIS Foundation (OGF) is dedicating one day of
the 9th Annual GRASS/GIS Conference and Exhibition to
exploration of the nation's critical need to implement
software tools that will support geodata
interoperability and the sharing of geospatial data in
the context of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

The day's program will consist of a series of panel
discussions and a luncheon, and will focus on issues
surrounding the development of the Open Geodata
Interoperability Specification The OGIS. Participants
in the discussions have all been chosen for their key
roles in the evaluation and implementation of potential
geodata standards, and they represent the diversity in
both interest and point of view that animates the
search for standards in this area.

OGIS is a software capability designed to standardize
access to geospatial data stored in proprietary
database formats, or recorded by means of government
distribution or transfer standards. The OGIS Project
was founded as a partnership between OGF, the US Army
Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research
Laboratory (USACERL), the Center for Advanced Spatial
Technologies at the University of Arkansas, and the
Center for Environmental Design Research at UC
Berkeley. The OGIS Process is a "consensus process"
designed to unite a broad range of commercial,
government and academic institutions in an effort to
develop a broadly useful solution to the interoperability
problem.

With this day of discussions we wish to inform the
public of developments in the OGIS Project and
technology area, and to invite broader participation on
the part of both public and private sector organizations
concerned with the development of data access and data
sharing solutions.

The 9th ANNUAL GRASS GIS CONFERENCE AND
EXHIBITION, sponsored by the Open GIS Foundation and
hosted by the Soil Conservation Service, will be held at
the Hyatt Regency Hotel Reston in Reston, Virginia,
from March 14 to March 18, 1994. The Conference will
be attended by people who are interested in Open GIS
and in the public domain, open architecture GIS, GRASS,
which was developed by USACERL and is in wide use in
government, universities, and industry. Workshops,
plenary lectures, a field trip, paper and poster
sessions, and exhibits will cover the full full range of
GIS topics. Registration for the panel discussions,
including the luncheon buffet, is included in the general
registration for the full conference. Call Pamela
Cashman 617-621-7025 (or send email to
cashman@crsa.bu.edu) for full Conference information.

The Open Forum is a substantial supplement to the
conference, made possible through the generous
encouragement and support of the following OGF
member organizations: Camber Corp., Intergraph Corp.,
Sun Microsystems, PCI Remote Sensing, and Genasys II.
