#3407: Tasks about tilecache (project not mantained)

We have this repository:
GitHub - OSGeo/tilecache: Tilecache
Hasn't been touched in 11 years

Has no README, LICENSE file, etc
Community Standards · GitHub

The last mail to the mailing list was on October 2015:
The Tilecache Archives

There is a webpage:
http://tilecache.org/
which resides on osgeo6

And is not listed on the OSGeo projects
Projects Archive - OSGeo

Domain is being paid by OSGeo
image.png

And the webpage is located on osgeo6, where we have our mail server
OSGeo6 is in the process of being containerized
Making sure you're not a bot!

----------------
As it is a project no longer maintained, I am thinking of steps to do:

1. For the purposes of getting the webpage out of `osgeo6` the priority is
low.
2. Add a README and a LICENSE file to the repository
3. Wait for the board to vote about making it heritage
4. Archive the repository
5. Do not renew the domain. its due on December 2025
6. If the webpage is kept:
6.1 Decide where to store it
   6.2 Use tilecache.osgeo.org
7. Close the mailing lists

Comment (by strk):

For the record: I've manually removed the tilecache.osgeo.org DNS record,
if we need it, we should add it to Ansible which is how we want to manage
DNS and has all the support to manage the osgeo.org zone, see #3188

Comment (by elil):

Just a few comments on this:

2. Many (but not all) of the files indicate BSD (at least generally if not
specifically which license),
tilecache/tilecache/TileCache/Cache.py at master · OSGeo/tilecache · GitHub.
The website and install readme on the website also state BSD,
Getting Started — TileCache v2.11 documentation

5. Even if the domain has no use, it should be kept and redirect to
OSGeo.org or similar. It is a longtime valuable domain and there are
previous cases of OSGeo (or related) projects losing their domain to
domain squatting and ads/spam/etc.
