Hello all
OSGeo:UK contributed to the recent GeoServer v3 crowdfunding campaign. GeoNetwork has a similar call to GeoServer’s recent campaign, for funding for v5, to update underlying components such as Java and some of its frameworks (https://www.geocat.net/blog/news-1/geonetwork-5-crowdfunding-12). It’s worth discussing if GeoNetwork would be a worthy recipient of a GoFundGeo grant from OSGeo:UK.
GeoNetwork is a spatial metadata catalogue, and is used by various UK open-source geospatial projects. It’s a core component of the open-source geospatial stack.
As with the GeoServer updates, this is difficult work to fund commercially. Customers pay for functionality or bugfixes, but wholesale updates like this cost too much for one paying customer to fund. As a result, if this is something OSGeo:UK might consider funding, I think it would be worth investigating.
Many thanks
Tom
