RE: [Geoserver-users] Buffering with WFS? (or WPS?)

Hmmm thank you for your answer Chris, it will save me a lot of time trying to get something working which isn't possible.

But does it sound strange that when I say that I see a pyamid of geo-actions, with view at the bottom and edit at the top, that buffer is between this top and bottom. What I try to say is that I as a non-expert on WFS and GeoServer assume that when I'm able to edit using WFS-T, it should be possible too to execute operations like buffering. Nevertheless these options are in (far) front of us as you tell me. Can someone tell me more about WPS then? It's still very pre-mature, isn't it?

Kind regards,
Hilbert Davelaar

Yeah, you'd need a WPS, which we don't implement, and probably is a ways
away. If you need buffering to be dynamic you're out of luck as of
now. But if you just want a static buffer you can define a view in
your database, though I imagine that's probably not sufficient for
  you...

The main reason is because of the OGC specs we base things on. They
haven't defined the buffer operation, at least not on the specs we
currently implement. They do editing, so that's why we implement it.

Can someone tell me more about WPS then? It's still very
pre-mature, isn't it?

Yes, quite premature. I haven't looked at it myself, but everyone who
does says it's not well enough defined. It's basically wanting to try
to do everything, and it's just super loose. Though you could dig into
the spec and test out implementations on geoserver, we'd be interested
in hearing your experiences, and rolling back in any useful code you
may come up with. But mostly you'll probably have to feed back into
the spec itself.

Chris
