RE: [VisCom] FW: OSGeo proposal?

That's awesome Michael,

the only item that I see a problem with is that the deliverables do not
appear to be very web-friendly. I would like to see some critical
portions of the brand manual as plain text, as well as various sizes and
implementations of the logo available in web format like PNG as well as
EPS downloads.

In essence, I want to be able do duplicate this page for OSGeo from the
deliverables, without too much effort:

For your consideration and discussion, attached is a proposal for the
"logo and branding" work I've been on about lately. It came in at $7K,
spread over four different phases; I think it is reasonable, but in any
case Lisa is scouting for a couple competing proposals so we'll get a
good idea of things.

Does VisCom as a group feel this effort is worth pursuing?

If so, I'm thinking that when the Board has their face-to-face it might
be nice to get them to give their approval (or disapproval) for the
expenditure. We need not commit to a vendor at this point, but we could
request they approve VisCom to spend $X on the project which would free
us to move as we saw fit.

Michael

Here is the proposal. I have included everything we discussed, including
brand guidelines.

I think it's good too. Only two things that came to mind: the web-friendliness idea that Jason brought, and I'm wondering where the 'official' logo stands in all this. We are just talking about refinements, right? Or are we going to consider significant changes to our logo so far.

These are just questions for more discussion if/when the contractor starts to work for us.

+1 - I give two thumbs up to the proposal.
Thanks for doing this Michael.

I think we're okay on the "web-friendly" aspect and the Joomla-document
(I suspect the proposal just isn't specific enough) but I will get this
feedback to John.

Yes, we're only talking about refining the logo, to make it work in all
media types. When he first saw the logo, John immediately told me
several things that should be fixed, including:

  - the "thin, sharp end-points" of the compass arrows will not work
well; should be
    shortend up and fattened

  - the gradient use of the green color won't work in many formats

  - why does it say "OSGeo.org" if we all keep just calling ourselves
"OSGeo"? we should
lose the four ".org" characters, to make the text shorter and
punchier

(Interestingly, the Lands End folks also commented/complained about the
first two issues when we first got the logo stitching set up...)

Re: comment 3...

Perhaps it doesn't matter for a unique string like OSGeo, but at GeoTec this year I saw Frank wearing a cool cap that just said "Safe" on it. Now, I knew that it was for Safe Software, and thought it was pretty cool, but Don Murray mentioned that it had been a really bad marketing decision because there was no way for non-users to connect, not even a web address.

I think that if we are going to shorten the text on the logo to OSGeo, we should also adopt a policy of putting the text www.osgeo.org somewhere on the item. For business cards, this would be on an info line, for T-shirts it could be under the logo or on the back of the shirt in big text, etc...

Looking at the clock and buttons at CafePress, I really see the value of having a version of the logo that has the name OSGeo inside the compass wheel instead of outside of it. I can also see the value in a vertical stacking, with the logo above OSGeo instead of beside it.
