Readonly mailing list mirrors creates additional topics on response with the same subject

We have setup and trialling a read-only mirror of the OSGeo-UK mailing list.

We noticed that every mail creates a new topic even if the mail subject remains intact.

Is this the expected behaviour? We thought that responding to a subject through email would attach the new message to an existing topic.

The screenshot below shows multiple topics being created for the mailing list subject `Re: [OSGeo-UK] GoFundGeo Launched!`

Mirroring has always maintained threading to my knowledge.

I don’t think the threading goes by subject, when mirroring, but some internal thread metadata set by mailman. Though on the mailman side they look threaded. It seems some messages are threaded while others are not, so threading doesn’t seem completely broken.
