[SAC] [Hosting] mysql1-vip (mysql1/mysql2) 5.6 -> 5.7 Upgrade | June 6th, 2022 17:00-20:00 UTC

All,

We will be upgrading one of our MySQL clusters (mysql1-vip (mysql1/mysql2)) Monday, June 6th, 2022 between 17:00-20:00 UTC (10am-1pm PDT).

Just prior to the upgrade (9am PDT), we will be running a backup of the cluster. We have tested that the backup can be completed without a read lock on the cluster. We have several contingencies in place to allow continued use during the backup. As a result, we expect no downtime from this backup operation.

We are upgrading MySQL (Percona) from 5.6 to 5.7. This is the next step towards managing the cluster under Chef and upgrading to a modern OS version. Expect more maintenance on this cluster in the near future.

This will result in up to 20 minutes of downtime in the middle of the window as we fail-over the cluster. We estimate that the actual downtime will be far less than that bound.

MySQL 5.7 increases the ‘strictness’ of the default sql_mode used. We will keep the configuration used by MySQL 5.6 during this upgrade, however we plan to migrate to the default MySQL 5.7 setting at a future date.

If you are using the vip1 cluster, please make sure you are using the mysql1-vip.osuosl.org address instead of mysql1/2.osuosl.org directly or additional outages will occur.

We have tested this upgrade in a separate environment and believe that it will have minimal impact to projects on the cluster. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We’ll be in #osuosl on Libera Chat during the upgrade in case any one needs to contact us directly.

Thanks!

All,

The upgrade to MySQL (Percona) 5.7 on the mysql1-vip cluster has been completed successfully! We had a few minutes of downtime to fail-over the cluster around 12:33 PDT.

Please reach out if you run into any issues. Expect information on additional maintenance in the near future.

Thanks!
