[SAC] Infrastructure for GEOS

All,

I would like to formally motion to have OSGeo host GEOS' project infrastructure. Because GEOS is not currently in incubation, the process that we defined for projects like MOSS4G was to motion to SAC asking for it, and then have SAC raise the issue with the board and have the board approve it. I volunteer to do the Trac/SVN migration, but GEOS would also like to migrate its mailing list (already mailman, IIRC), so we'd need someone to step forward to bootstrap that.

/me starts with a +1. If there are no objections, I will notify the board and wait to hear back from them before moving.

Howard,

I'll second that, and volunteer to do the mailman migration.

Following on from the "Supporting new projects" thread, I'm interested to know how SAC feel about providing infrastructure to new projects.

Do we have resources to set up and then maintain svn, mailing lists, etc for all projects wanting to join OSGeo Labs?

If not, what is the criteria we use to say one project is given resources and another is not?

Cameron,

Our current mechanisms for setting up Trac, and Subversion repositories
is somewhat labour intensive, so it isn't really that easy to roll out
services for many projects. Our current approach is that SAC provides
it's standard services to OSGeo projects, and to projects for which there
are volunteers (with appropriate access) willing to setup and maintain
the services.

So, for instance, GDAL as an OSGeo gets service. MOSS4G had to ask nicely,
and because there were core SAC members willing to do the work it got service
(and because it met other general criteria - open source, and geospatial).

Howard and I are willing to step forward to do stuff for GEOS because
we have a particular interest in the project. But we aren't necessarily
willing to do so for many other projects.

I would add that I look favourable on GEOS because I know it aims to
go through incubation, and because I think it is likely to make it into
incubation.

Does that make sense?

Best regards,

It sure helps that you and Howard are on the systems committee. Perhaps if a project is interested in hosting support from OSGeo, someone from that project could also volunteer to help with other systems committee tasks. That is, if there are tasks SAC thinks it can delegate to new helpers.

It might be a good way to enlist some new volunteers.

I've been feeling curmudgeonly recently...

I would prefer to see this the other way around. That is, that a person on the SAC and actively contributing can have a voice in choosing to support these projects, not that a project can get hosting by volunteering to help. I'd like to see evidence of commitment to the infrastructure first. Otherwise, we risk killing off our existing volunteers with extra workload from projects that have promised help but not delivered.
