[SAC] Legit users vs. spam users

Hi,

FYI. I was asking for help at the SMW mailing list, and got some answers, the second one is quite alarming, I think we should look into this spam user problem.
I will ask them for tools that can help.

Hi,

Aside from SMW, looking at [0] where it looks like that a lot of users
have been created on your wiki that could be categorized as not legit
and you might want to introduce some counter measurements.

@Karsten can maybe help and list some tools/extensions to fight that
sort of unsolicited user spam.

Hi,

A very quick look revealed:

[0] contains related geo data where [1] does not because [2] contains
the template which should not (as a redirect) contain any template.
The template from [2] needs to be moved to [1]. I'm not quite sure why
the User:Jmckenna redirect is missing from Jeff_McKenna.

Now, some users, that appear to have correctly added the SMW data to
their User: pages, have the problem that they wont show up on the
Memeber Map.

Where is the "Member map" that hosts the query and displays its
members where [0] doesn't show up (on the [0] user page itself a map
is shown)?.

Hello,

I deployed SMW to the OSGeo wiki last week, to implement (in a first
step) a derictory including a map for the OSGeo Members.

I set up a model [0] using mobo, and deployed it successfully.
Additionally I managed to import data from a now not anymore working
implementaion of a previous userMap using the DataTransfer extensioen.
You can read about this in more detail here [2].

Now, some users, that appear to have correctly added the SMW data to
their User: pages, have the problem that they wont show up on the
Memeber Map.

Here are two examples:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User:Wildintellect
https://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php?title=User:Jmckenna&redirect=no

Both users added their data using the according template, as described
here [3].

I ran several time the "Data repair and upgrade" on Special:SMWAdmin and
the 'php maintenance/runJobs.php' on the server, because I thought its a
caching issue or something. But it did not solve the issue.

Does anyone see what the problem is? Or what I could try to fix it?

Thanks and regards,
Christian

Hi,

another SMW dev recommended to install the QuestyCaptcha MW Extension [1], to get rid of the spam user registrations problem.

Ok?

Hi again,

using Mediawiki's
php maintenance/removeUnusedAccounts.php ...

I have trashed the recently added 720 spam accounts.

Furthermore 1:
Over the weekend I have deleted around 16300 more spam accounts.

Furthermore 2:
I just didn't figure out (after having spent 4 hours on this topic),
how to get rid of the blocked accounts. UserMerge and BlockAndNuke
extensions failed on this.
Mediawiki, anyone?

Cheers
Markus

Thanks Markus!

Looks good to me, you also came up with some good questions.

I hope this helps to prevent the spam now.

Did you also already something against all the now existing user accounts?
Another dev on the SMW list recommended this script [1], to get rid of most of these accounts.

Cheers,
Christian
