[SAC] Mailing lists backlog

SAC,

I came across this: https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/939#comment:2 which refers to several tickets requesting new mailing lists that have not been addressed in several weeks. (and there may be more, I didn't check)

Is there a reason why those are blocked or did those tickets just fall in a black hole? It would be kind to have someone respond to them to explain the long wait or tell them why the request cannot be addressed. Maybe SAC needs a mailing list champion, in charge of responding promptly to all such requests, if there is not already one?

I don't recall there being a problem with any of the requests, just
limited volunteer time to implement. Last I checked one or two people
handle all the list requests, adding a 3rd such person would be good.
Are you or Jorge interested? A single dedicated person is prone to
slower response times due to days off/vacation/work load and the ticket
system keeps us from duplicating work.

Thanks,
Alex

Daniel,

Alan and I normally deal with these. When one slips through
cracks email-wise it is unlikely to be revisited unless someone
points it out which is what appears to have happened to these.

I'll take care of them.

In general it would be nice if someone kept an eye on the SAC
bug queue and followed up on items that get neglected.

Best regards,

I noticed that this seemed to be the case. Unfortunately this can be frustrating to outsiders who do not understand why their request is getting no response, which in the end defeats other outreach efforts made by OSGeo.

Perhaps if one of the volunteers was formally in charge of mailing list requests, that person could periodically review the ticket queue looking for unaddressed ones and either deny, dispatch or address them. Other SAC admins would still be encouraged to grab requests as they come in, but if nobody does then we'd know that someone would grab the ball on their next periodical review.

Since Frank's time is already in prime demand with his new role as President of the board, I'd be tempted to suggest Alan as the person to periodically review pending mailing list requests, if he agrees.

Agreed.

I have considered that person to be me; however, I rarely
go trawling for unsatisfied bug reports in any of the projects
I'm involved with even though I *could*.

Other SAC admins

I would be pleased if Alan would like to take on primary
responsibility for mailing lists if he is willing.

Hi,

As I'm also in charge of the Nabble archives that are related with
mailing lists, I offer myself to start doing the simple tasks related
with mailman like creating mailing lists and try to have an eye on
mailing lists tickets at Trac.

I know how this committee and OSGeo in general work, so I waited all
August for those tickets and my main intention with the comment was to
resolve it but also move on this topic.

So, please, if you think I can help on this, count me in and I'll do my best.

Jorge,

Thank you for your help. It's appreciated. I'll let you take the lead but don't hesitate to ask me if you are unavailable for some tasks. I can help for various maintenance.

Alan

Jorge,

Thank you for keeping an eye on it and reminding us. Since we operate
mostly as a do-ocracy (http://www.communitywiki.org/DoOcracy) it's
critical that people like you are willing to step up and help keep us going.

If you do happen to have a conversation with community members who are
wondering why we don't always immediately process a request, make sure
they understand how we operate, and that contributing volunteer hours
(even if on a different task) allows us to get their request done sooner.

Thanks,
Alex

Alan, OK I will take a look on the wiki for mailman documentation and
will ask you off list for any help.

Alex thanks and don't worry, as OSGeo advocates we always focus on
DoOcracy at any level from Foundation (or Global) to Local and Micro
Chapters, that's one of the things I love of this organization.

Cheers
