Did the DNS change for osgeo.org recently?

Mail to osgeo.org suddenly broke because osgeo.org is a CNAME to
www.osgeo.org — mail systems are supposed cannily records when they have a
CNAME, so user@osgeo.org is getting re-written to user@www.osgeo.org —
which has not MX record, and the server is not running a mail server.

Suggest either switching osgeo.org to an A record (because CNAME are
awful) or adding a MX record to www.osgeo.org. The former is better.

Comment(by dfuhriman):

That was supposed to say "canonify" not "cannily". Stupid auto-correct.

Comment:

I've reverted "osgeo.org" to an A-record.
I disagree with your wholesale statement concerning CNAMES being awful,
next time I'll invite you to do all the manual edits. Thanks for your
support.

Comment(by dfuhriman):

trust me, I know the pain — I've been doing DNS edits for 20 years. :slight_smile:

But CNAMEs still are evil — for exactly the reason things broke here.
People treat them as aliases, and they're not really aliases, but they're
enough like aliases that people treat them that way.

If you want to argue that DNS needs a genuine alias type, then I'm all on
board. :slight_smile:
