My understanding is that Portus is only the authentication layer, the
actual registry would be https://github.com/docker/distribution

Another option is described here: https://weblog.wemanity.com/docker-
registry-docker-hub-at-home-for-free/
It still uses github.com/docker/distribution for the registry itself but
uses https://hub.docker.com/r/cesanta/docker_auth/ for authentication
(also supports LDAP)

This was done a long time ago.
We now have https://repo.osgeo.org which includes a docker registry that
utilizes our ldap authentication.
currently being used by sac, geoserver, geos, and postgis
