[SAC] [OSGeo] #2756: Browsers hitting www.geoserver.org (in addition to geoserver.org)

The GeoServer web site is currently hosted at https://geoserver.org.

When typing the address, browsers (and users) can prefix that with
https://www.geoserver.org, which currently provides no response.

Since OSGeo now controls the GeoServer DNSs, I'm wondering if it's
possible to have browsers with www.geoserver.org.

I have no experience with how this is done though... I'd imagine, by
pointing the DNS records to the same IPs as geoserver.org, but I may be
way off the mark

Do you have any suggestion?

Comment (by robe):

Andrea,

We don't control the DNS. We only control the registration.
The plan is to transfer the DNS, but I can't without knowing the entries
and planet said they couldn't send us the Zone records. I'm not sure why.
I assume they don't have control of the amazon admin panel and not sure
who does.

Do you happen to know what entries geoserver.org has. The current DNS
servers for geoserver.org appear to be hosted on amazon.

They are:

NS-1421.AWSDNS-49.ORG
NS-1587.AWSDNS-06.CO.UK
NS-305.AWSDNS-38.COM
NS-924.AWSDNS-51.NET

If I can get those entries, I can move geoserver away from that dns and
then make that change you requested.

Comment:

Andrea and Jody,

Are we ready to completely move geoserver yet?

I need to know what all the DNS entries should be and unfortunately I
don't have access to the amazon dns to check and planet has been unhelpful
in giving me this information.

Comment:

After discussion with Jody and Alessandro Parma, and no success yet
getting zone file from Planet, we decided to just recreate one based on
what we know.

So I have switched over the DNS to Pairs from Planet, and added entries
for

Hosted on github.io: geoserver.org, www.geoserver.org so used the same
setup as with other github.io hosted projects.

build.geoserver.org (still points at planet build server, a server is
already set up waiting for ip to replace)

docs.geoserver.org (still points at planet host, with plans to move to
osgeo infra #2461 #2640 )

Feel free to open this if it still doesn't work. I think there is
something special you need to do on your github.io setup for
www.geoserver.org to work in https, but not sure the details. Worsed
case, I can set that up on osgeo and have it redirect to
https://geoserver.org.
