[SAC] OSGeo FOSS4G Vimeo Account costs and upgrade to PRO Unlimited or other negotiations

Hello SAC team,

OSGeo has a vimeo account to upload the videos from the conferences. It is the same Vimeo account that Portland used. We want to use it for upcoming FOSS4G in August 2016.

At the moment we have vimeo pro with 20GB/week

This is not enough for FOSS4G - we need 40-100 GB for the 3 day.

We could change to PRO Unlimited which offers 3TB toal. This costs 359 €/ year .

Normal vimeo pro costs 159 €/ year.

Can we switch to PRO Unlimited? Can someone go into negotiations with vimeo?

Else our video team has to upload 20GB per week which is a bit of a
trouble....and keeps people waiting.

I wrote with Alex Mandel about this topic before. He wrote:
(Begin)
There was a discussion on the SAC list a few months back when that
account's pro features were expiring to try and find a less expensive
long term repository. I suppose we could also try to make a special
arrangement with Vimeo, since this is a public archive of a non-profit.

We should probably bring this back up on the SAC email list and figure
out the solution.

Could you please discuss this soon, as it is not so much time left till FOSS4G.

Thanks a lot Astrid

It might be worth considering the installation of a MediaGloblin [1]
service on a dedicated host, so to also allow for full branding [2],
federation (local commettees could run their own node), logins using
the OSGeo Userid [3] and to ensure videos will be easier to see and
share with free software.

Hi,

just my two cents, and sorry in advance for that proposal.

But I think 359 €/year for a service that you can get for free with even better conditions in terms of upload size and usability, is a bit to much.

I would go with youtube upload and publishing for easy sharing via social media and embedding into a website, and maybe a simple straight-forward web space hosting for the video files (apache directory index for http download of the video files).

Or even better for the archive side of the videos, Peter Löwe @ TIB is offering (and already conducting) to archive videos of FOSS4G conferences, so we do not even need to host the videos on our own infrastructure (lots of space needed).

Please ignore this mail, if I may hurt feelings by proposing youtube.

regards,
Christian

Could we get Peter Löwe in this thread for giving more details about
the initiative and confirming availability for such service ?

@Peter: On the SAC list we are thinking about a solution for hosting and archiving the videos of the FOSS4G conferences.
I brought up your work in this regard. Would you like to comment on your work here? If this would be a suitable solution?

Dear Christian, all,

I work for the German National Library for Science and Technology (TIB), located in Hannover, Germany (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_National_Library_of_Science_and_Technology). We are operating a web portal for scientific video ("TIB|AV-portal") as a service to the public since 2014. TIB actively acquires scientific and technical content in the field of information technology / computer sciences / informatics in both German and English. In this field, TIB has already been acquiring video recordings from OSGeo conferences on national (-> german FOSSGIS conferences) and global level (FOSS4G). This year, the collection will be extended to include the recordings from FOSS4GNA (which is on right now). We're also busy harvesting videos from previous OSGeo-conferences from unreliable (in our mind) platforms like Youtube to preserve older content.
All video content in the AV-portal has passed quality-checks by the TIB subject librarians, has received a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to make it scientifically citable and is being processed to enable OCR- and voice-to-text-based queries about the content. TIB does not charge for this service. The videos are archived according to modern library standards which will ensure that they can be reliably assessed in the future. If the licence allows (it usually does for OSGeo videos), videos can be downloaded by the user, we even send them on a DVD via surface mail, if postage & handling are covered.

It is also fine if video content is distributed via multiple platforms, apart from the AV-Portal, including Vimeo and/or Youtube.

Peter, thanks for the in-depth explanation of the service !

I tried an "osgeo" query but it only returns 16 results [1], is
there a better way to find OSGeo-specific content ?
[1] https://av.tib.eu/search?q=osgeo

Would it be appropriate/useful/feasible for OSGeo to provide
a view into the OSGeo-specific videos in the TIB/AV collection ?

Astrid, does the TIB handling of video look good enough for your scope ?

It would be interesting to discuss how a "view" from OSGeo into the AV-Portal could look like.

One example could be adding the AV-Portal links to each of the past event

which is the destination of a link from http://2015.foss4g.org

Then maybe Christian has some ideas about integrating the videos
into MediaWiki ?

Yes, a very good idea. This would be certainly possible through the open Metadata of the AV-Portal and the DataCite DOI metadata.

Hello sac-team,

in the end all videos from foss4g2016 will be available at
TIB|AV-portal. The problem is, that it will take some weeks to make them
available. But we would like to make the videos available at the weekend
after the conference. I am already in contact with Peters team and we
prepare the upload.

A simple solution like the one from fosdem would be fine for me too [2].
Do we have a server where we can upload the videos and create the alias
f.e. http://video.foss4g.org/? Would be am simple solution

Astrid,

sorry for the late reply, I just was able to catch up with the SAC list mails now.
There was/is a severe spam attack on OSGeo infrastrucuture going on, and a lot of traffic was caused on this list, so thats maybe why nobody responded (at least not via the list).

But to your question. I am afraid, I can't give you a definite an answer.

What you ask would cost some money, i.e. installing some additional hard disks into an OSGeo server or renting some webspace for this solution (maybe a cloud storage service like Dropbox opr Amazon, or whatever?).

But to estimate the cost, we would first need an estimate of how much space (in GB or even TB) is needed for all the videos.

Then we would have to see, if that cost is lower, than the Vimeo offer. (I did not hear anything about the youtube idea, so I guess this is unpopular here).

For just storing the videos and providing access to TIB later, a 10 TB NAS for ~ 600 € should be sufficient, and could be bought from the FOSS4G LOC for that purpose I think?

Cheers,
Christian
