[SAC] osgeo.net dns entries

Folks,

Currently visitors to osgeo.net or www.osgeo.net end up on the test server.
I would like to change these dns entries to point to osgeo1, so they will
end up on the main drupal instance. test.osgeo.org would continue to point
to the test server (osgeo2).

Are there any objections to this change?

Shawn/Howard - would one of you be willing to make the change if we proceed?
I'm leery about screwing up DNS and hate to do any but the simpliest things.

Best regards,

I would recommend a HTTP redirect from http://www.osgeo.net/ to http://www.osgeo.org/ instead of an alias, this is so that osgeo.org remains the only authoritative domain for OSGeo sites and you don't end up with multiple URLs (under multiple domains) pointing to the same stuff... I'm no expert in search engine ranking, but I'm sure this has to be better somehow for our ranking in search results, etc. ... and that also keeps the door open for using osgeo.net or osgeo.com for other aspects of OSGeo someday.

You're right Daniel, it's not generally a good thing.

Could we not just park the other domains? Is losing the wildcard DNS an
option yet?

Jason / Daniel,

A redirect would be fine with me, though I'm too clueless to implement
that.

I'm agast at the idea of just parking the domains. My other complaint,
not yet raised, is that osgeo.com goes to a parking site instead of
redirecting to osgeo.org.

In the interest of ensuring this idea isn't lost I've filed it as a
ticket.

I agree, it is a good idea.
