[SAC] osgeo wiki issues

Hi all,

Because I am working on a foss4g bid, I have been spending time on the wiki recently. In doing so I came across a few issues I thought I would share in the hopes of it being helpful:

  • The Community portal link is dead, can it be removed?
  • What is the criteria for “Current events” it seems like many things are tagged as such, that are no longer current?

Thanks for your time,

Guido

Hey folks,

Jeff has pointed out to me that I was not being specfic/clear enough in my last message, so I would like to elaborate in order to make this information more useful.

Hope this is helpful,

Guido

* The community portal is dead, can it be removed from the sidebar links?
(at the left of every page)
    sidebar page: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/MediaWiki:SideBar
    community portal page:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Wiki:Community_portal

Yes, that link is rather useless...
The Mediawiki maintainer may remove the link:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Interface/Sidebar#Links

* What is the criteria for "Current events" it seems like many things are
tagged as such, that are no longer current?
    Current events page:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Wiki:Current_events

... this one is about do-ocracy, i.e. the event owners should take
care of maintaining their pages. Unfortunately it rarely happens. So
that is a nice task for a volunteer to go through and update the pages
(very easy to do, and a welcome contribution!).

* Sidebar is being pushed to the bottom of the page
I notived this when I was using chrome, but it seems to work correctly
in firefox. I tried to debug this issue, but cannot seem to figure it out.

No idea here... in Chromium it also happens.
Likely an update of the Mediawiki version would help here. The GRASS
GIS project uses a more recent version, no such issue there:

Thanks for the feedback Markus,

I would be happy to do the review of the current events page. I don’t think I saw a guideline for deciding what is current, should I start by adding that somewhere in the Wiki then go ahead and reference those guidelines as I update pages?

I apologize if this seems really asinine, I am very much a #n00b and want to make sure I do things to be helpful without making too many mistakes.

There is some guidance on use of [[Category:Events]] and
[[Category:Past Events]] here,
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Event_Management#After_the_Event

I think that any reasonable cleanup would be appreciated and great
effort to notify and document probably isn't required. Most of these
appear to be very straight forward routine cleanup.

I'm happy to answer questions, especially if it facilitates someone
doing work. Mistakes sometimes happen and hopefully people kindly
correct and help you when mistakes happen.

I cleaned up a few pages I'm affiliated with. You can see some of
them here (for a while),

Thanks for working on this.

ok, I did some more research and the issue revolves around the following css file:

/* KHTML fix stylesheet /
/
work around the horizontal scrollbars */
#column-content { margin-left: 0; }

I tested this issue in Chrome and resolved the issue by turning off the single css file in dev tools.

The bug was reported in 2009 and again in 2012 here:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=19586

Perhaps its time to update the media wiki version
existing: 1.16 (http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Special:Version)
current: 1.25

Let me know if there is more information required to resolve this:

Guido,
thanks for the help.

I removed the Comunity Portal link.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Wrt updating, this is indeed way overdue. It has been postponed for
multiple reasons including admins phasing out, the wish to unify logins
with the main web site LDAP authentication, updating issues with images
(they have previously disappeared during an update and were hell to get
back) and so on. Currently we only have emergency mode wrt
administration of the Wiki. Maybe someone from the admin group has more
to add?

This is the list of current users with Sysop permissions:

Is there an issue tracking system for managing ops issues? In my short time as a part of the open source community I have seen many groups use github to simply track issues so that the community can keep tally.

I don’t know if this would work here, but it could stream line the conversations about issues. I see that osgeo has repos for presentations, and documentation. Perhaps a repo called “SAC” would allow for issue tracking topics around the main site and wiki.

Thoughts?
