[SAC] WebDAV for download.osgeo.org

All,

After Martin's LDAP work and migrating the GeoTools project to OSGeo, we now have the ability to do LDAP-enabled WebDAV on the TelaScience blades. This means that once configured, people can connect to download.osgeo.org and place or change files with a WebDAV client. I was wondering if there would be support for making all of the download directories WebDAV-enabled, giving each directory access by its svn LDAP group.

The biggest advantage of this is removing the need for SSH access for most folks, as I think the biggest demand for shell access is simply to copy files to the machine. If there is general support for such an approach, I will make it happen and document it.

Did you consider installing a chroot'ed "rssh" for most of the 'plain'
shell accounts as an alternative ? Together with WebDAV this would
probably provide best of both worlds: WebDAV for the "fancy gui"-
people as well as those behind an HTTP proxy, SFTP/SCP with WinSCP for
the "lean gui"-folks as well as the command line people .... or simply
those who are transferring files from a remote machine and/or via batch
processing ?

Cheers,
  Martin.

Howard,

My opinion is that WebDAV support should be setup for projects on the download
server on an as-needed basis with the processing of adding it well documented
in the download server page in the wiki.

I don't anticipate it being helpful for most projects.

Best regards,
