Shirts and CafePress

I have embraced the "Don't ask, just do!" model -- to wit, check this
out:

    http://www.cafepress.com/OSGeo

So, I would like to make the following proposal for the selling shirts &
stuff:

* CafePress will be used to sell shirts and other stuff directly to
members
  - shirts, bumper stickers, teddy bears, what have you
  - quality is "good" but not "great"
  - profits go directly to foundation
  - we don't need to handle payments, returns, shipping, etc

* Lands' End will be used for bulk orders of "really nice" shirts
  - to give to volunteers at shows
  - for VIP give-aways at shows
  - shipping would go directly to show venue (or mpg/LizardTech, if need
be)
  - VisCom will manage these orders directly

Three specific issues need resolution:
  - I'd like to get some help tweaking the "store front" design (someone
with a
    sense of style)
  - I'd like some suggestions on pricing (how much do we want to make?)
  - I need to coordinate with Treasurer Gary in arranging accounts and
such

Also, we might have some discussion about how this direct-sale process
affects the idea of "contribute $X to become a Foundation sponsor, and
get a free shirt". (I'd suggest the shirt-for-membership idea is a good
one, and we use the "really nice, super-exclusive" Lands End shirts for
this purpose.)

All that being said, the CafePress site is technically live right now
and ready to roll. If we advertised it tomorrow, orders would start to
appear.

Great job Michael.

I wouldn't claim to have a sense of style. I think you've done a good job (now, there's a backhanded compliment for you).

I'd be happy to help add more items though. Apart from apparel, these have some potential:

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/product.aspx?clear=true&no=1
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/product.aspx?clear=true&no=49
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/product.aspx?clear=true&no=119

Oh, and gotta set up some "OSGeo Inside" options:

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/product.aspx?clear=true&no=80

Dear Michael and VisCom,

Is there a way to donate some T-Shirts to
the volunteers who are trying to put up
an OSGeo exhibition at MapAsia 2006
(www.mapaisa.org).

T-Shirts can be sent to
Attn. OSGeo Exhibit Booth 39
Map Asia 2006 Secretariat
Room No. 405 Maple House Executive Apartment
417, Sathon 11 (Narathiwat Ratchanakharin 10),
Sathon, Bangkok 10120

Maybe some high quality OSGeo project brochures
can be sent as well.

Kind regards

+1 in favour of the proposal. I do wonder about more international issues with these options - something we'll have to consider in the medium term at least - to find some foreign options similar to these. Shipping to China will likely be our first exposure to the true costs  As our local chapters spread we should try to get some on-the-ground promo contacts for these kinds of things.

Three specific issues need resolution:
  - I'd like to get some help tweaking the "store front" design (someone

Aside from adding more types of content, how much more our we actually able to do?

  - I'd like some suggestions on pricing (how much do we want to make?)

Good question. I think that cost recovery is a good goal at this point. Since shirts are such critical promotional items at conferences, etc. I don't think we should be making profit on them. I also don't think they would bring us much revenue regardless.

Also, we might have some discussion about how this direct-sale process
affects the idea of "contribute $X to become a Foundation sponsor, and

I agree - I think we should make the lands end type of shirt more tied to the membership contribution idea. Obviously, we need to assemble the membership package in its totality soon - having this cafe press option available will at least give us a bit of time. Good stuff!

+1 from to open that up for the public...

Hi Michael,

Great work on this. I'll just speak on the Fundraising component:

1. Land's end shirts for members only is a great idea - we can charge a chunk more and gives an extra priviledge for becoming a member.

2. How about a $5 OSGeo surcharge on all items? It's not a lot, but let's us tell people that purchasing includes a contribution to OSGeo which is a feel good thing for people. If anything, I think it might encourage more purchases rather than discouraging them.

I've looked around, and yes: PayPal is perfect for collecting donations.

I've just pinged Gary on what needs to be done to actually enable our

We have the treasurer@osgeo.org address set up with PayPal. Is
PayPal a good way to collect donations or, does anybody know, if
there is something more designed for non-profits available?

Update:

* I've finished setting up look/feel of the CafePress -- it's not great,
but it'll do unless/until someone else wants to improve things.

* I've added a wide range of products. If you have other ideas, such as
shirts with something printed on the back or a logo variant, send us
your ideas.

* We are going with a fixed markup of 25%. This works out to about $5
for a shirt, which was our target -- but by using a relative percentage,
you don't have to pay $5.99 for one little button.

* I am working w/ Gary to work out the where-does-the-money-go issue.

* Per-individual Lands' End shirt orders are just too complicated to
support. So in order to drive up donations and provide a tangible
benefit, we will at some point be adding an especially nice CafePress
shirt that has a special "I Support OSGeo!" logo on it -- at a price
point of $50 or something. (This work is pending us getting some logo
design support.)

* The launch plan will be to (1) notify webcom, so as to get a link on
our homepage, and (2) send out mail to the discuss list.

Unless otherwise notified, I plan to go live with this on Friday!

Subject: [Fundraising] Shirts and CafePress

I have embraced the "Don't ask, just do!" model -- to wit, check this
out:

    http://www.cafepress.com/OSGeo

So, I would like to make the following proposal for the
selling shirts &

  - to give to volunteers at shows
  - for VIP give-aways at shows
  - shipping would go directly to show venue (or
mpg/LizardTech, if need
be)
  - VisCom will manage these orders directly

Three specific issues need resolution:
  - I'd like to get some help tweaking the "store front"
design (someone
with a
    sense of style)
  - I'd like some suggestions on pricing (how much do we want
to make?)
  - I need to coordinate with Treasurer Gary in arranging accounts and
such

Also, we might have some discussion about how this direct-sale process
affects the idea of "contribute $X to become a Foundation sponsor, and
get a free shirt". (I'd suggest the shirt-for-membership
idea is a good
one, and we use the "really nice, super-exclusive" Lands End
shirts for
this purpose.)

All that being said, the CafePress site is technically live right now
and ready to roll. If we advertised it tomorrow, orders
would start to
appear.

to Tyler. I am not sure if the volunteers will be able
to make a payment for this.

Dear Tyler,

My name is Sarawut,I am a doctoral student in Osaka City University and also Dr.Venkateash 's student. I will be a volunteer during Mapasia2006 in Bkk for OSGeo promote work. I think 10 - 15 shirts also would be fine.

Best regards

I passed this on to Michael because he was already looking at shirt orders.

Michael, sounds like we need to hustle up commitment from board to cover the cost of a batch of shirts for MapAsia. Have you already put it through the board gauntlet? $400-500 would cover it off, right, with $100 rush fee. Land's end turned around my order in 2 days and shipped. Wonder how long to ship direct to China?

Venka, if you can help push through an approval from board to cover these costs, then Michael can be liberated  and just get it done for you.

Tyler

Hi Board,

Can OSGeo donate some t-shirts for the volunteers at
OSGeo Booth at MapAsia 2006 being held from
August 29 to Sept 1 2006 in Bangkok Thailand.

If OSGeo can cover the cost, the T-shirts can be shipped
to

Yes, sure.

+1 from Arnulf

($500 to do this kind of thing should be fine for the cahir of VisCom to
spend without coming back to the board.)

+1 both on the decision and the judgement call about delegating this
scope of decision. VisCom should have a stated budget it can work
within for, what, 6 months? and have budget items and so on.
http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Committee_Guidelines is the letter of
the law about mpg's role here - and how much of this is still subject
to viscom decision making internally.
