Spreading the word about Sol Katz award 2024

Hi team,

I’ve just posted the news item about 2024 Sol Katz award, please feel free to redistribute to any other socials you see fit

Post published at:

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thanks, @jmckenna for the actual work organizing this.

Thanks @jsanz (and congrats Tom).

We have an obligation to sponsors when posting news items and press releases like this.

Please add the “About OSGeo” text, link above heading Q: What is the “About OSGeo” section of a press release? or look at prior news posts for an example.

Anything else?

Hi @jive, this is the first time I get a request like this so bear with me.

You mean to add to the end of the post something like this (copied from here) or anything different?

About OSGeo

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to foster global adoption of open geospatial technology by being an inclusive software foundation devoted to an open philosophy and participatory community driven development.

The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration.

Visit osgeo.org for more information.

I updated already, have a look.

I have the time, I had asked a question before also. What email id should I be using for setting up for bluesky account? Which team should I connect for email verification.
I’ll also need to do DNS verification for bluesky, so need a direction for that as well.

@jive @jsanz

Do we need bluesky?

Here are the channels that we already have
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/News_Queue

I’m not interested in BlueSky, but I’ll support whatever the committee decides (maybe this is a discussion for another thread).

In any case, maybe we should centralize the email address used for socials so there’s no bottleneck. Something like social@osgeo.org to be distributed to a few people here, so password recoveries and such are not a problem. This is what we are already doing for the News Queue.

@jsonsingh, for the DNS part, you’ll need to open a ticket at https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ so our admins (SAC) can assist you.

Thanks for the wiki page, I had forgotten bout it. I think we can remove the section on developer profiles and Drupal

This is outreach so I am fine if we take osgeo message out into different places such as bluesky; just so long as we respect volunteer capacity.

@jsanz I added instructions for “About OSGeo” section to News Queue - OSGeo

OSGeo has taken to writing our official updates as press releases, even if they often are only posted to our foundation news section.

It costs money to submit a press release to a trade publication so it has only been done very rarely for joint press releases with sponsors or partners.

I have created the Bluesky account using the email : social@osgeo.org and the account is at: @osgeo.bsky.social on Bluesky

Have added the entry in wiki

I have created a ticket on trac.osgeo.org

As noted in Re: [OSGeo] #3325: Verify email address and DNS records for bluesky OSGeo account I don’t see this email address in our system so assume it needs to be created. I need to know who needs to be on it.

Hey @robe , following the suggestio from Spreading the word about Sol Katz award 2024 - #7 by jsanz

We can revisit in Jan if you are unavailable.
If possible, please register the email alias and forward to the emails to my account (social@jsonsingh.com)

On a separate note how is trac connected to discourse ?
Any and all tickets show up on discourse? And I can’t reply to the post on here:

Yah we have the trac tickets posted to discourse too. It’s readonly I think to users. Mostly it’s just an easy way for me to keep abreast of tickets cause I hate mail and I keep track of other stuff on discourse anyway.

Sac mailing list is also mirrored, though I think a lot of people are annoyed about that. All the SAC related stuff is here - SAC - OSGeo Discourse

Trac is … very intimidating. Since discourse has the concept of Q&A - and marking a question as answered. I wonder if it could be used as approachable issue tracker for SAC and others with a public facing capacity?

I think in terms of flexibility of reporting I still prefer trac. I know there are some plugins around for discourse that try an attempt at a ticket tracker, but I haven’t reviewed any of them.
