Name: Tavgun Kaur

Tell us about yourself:
I am a 2nd year undergraduate student in Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. My academic interests combine civil engineering and technology, especially how geospatial tools can support analysis and decision-making in civil engineering domains.

Any OSGeo projects and communities you are involved in:
I am not actively involved in any OSGeo projects or open-source geospatial communities. I am quite new to open-source contribution and this would be my first step towards contributing to OSGeo. However, I am eager to start learning and engaging with the community.

What do you want to learn / contribute?
My interest in geospatial tools and technologies developed through one of my core courses at IIT Roorkee, Geospatial Engineering where we worked hands-on with QGIS for basic spatial analysis and visualization. Exploring geospatial datasets, working with layers and performing map-based analysis during this course genuinely fascinated me and motivated me to explore this field further.

I am particularly interested in learning how large-scale geospatial open-source projects are developed collaboratively, building my technical skills and exploring how geospatial software is used in civil engineering and urban contexts.

I am very interested in applying for GSoC’26 and would love to receive guidance on how to get started, identify beginner-friendly projects and contribute meaningfully over time. I am highly motivated, eager to learn new tools and workflows and looking forward to learning from the community.

Tech Stack at present:

  • Programming Languages: Python, C++, JavaScript
  • Web Technologies: HTML, CSS, React (basic), Node.js (basic)
  • Geospatial Tools: QGIS, Emlid Studio, Mission Planner, RealityScan
  • Version Control: Git, GitHub

While this is my current tech stack, I am not limited to it. I am highly motivated to learn new technologies required for effective open-source contribution.

Thank you, and I’m excited to be here!

Tavgun,

Welcome. Please review Google Summer of Code - OSGeo Discourse to get a flavor of past google summer of code projects.

The projects that generally take students are GRASS, Zoo-Project, and pgRouting.
Both pgRouting and Grass have a presence on this discourse. Feel free to ask questions on:
