Translator error when generating XML from a shapefile

Hello community,

I have problems with generating XML from shapefiles. The shapefiles can be open in QGIS and don’t have any invalid characters in the attributte table. The geometries are exported correctly, but errors occur when the attributes are called in an online viewer connected to the Geoserver.

The layer preview in Geoserver in shows the following error:

error:Translator error Translator error Error reading Features Could not transform layer_name.1 :org.w3c.dom.DOMException: INVALID_CHARACTER_ERR: An invalid or illegal XML character is specified. INVALID_CHARACTER_ERR: An invalid or illegal XML character is specified.

Do you have any suggestions?

some dbase files use a different character set than expected; you may need to configure that, see Shapefile — GeoServer 2.28.x User Manual
