[Viscom-dev] FW: [Mass-Market-GEO] Where 2.0 brainstorming

Tyler, et al:

OGC/Raj is wondering what to do at Where 2.0.

I know I’m way out of the loop on this, but have we talked with the Where folk lately?

ESRI has been participating in the last few O’Reilly conferences and I think we could work on some OGC related demo’s along with our other presentations. Like Ed said, we would be happy to showcase some of the w*S stuff and maybe also do some georss, kml, openls stuff that may be of interest to the general IT crowd that shows up. Ed is right about the slow moving elephant comment … but I guess that is the downside of what has to be a “deliberative process” !

Hi Raj,

I will be there one way or another… I think with the nature of Where 2.0 OGC needs to be more than just there… perhaps some form of practical demonstration of W*S services, there is the perception that OGC is the slow moving elephant and we need to prove our relevance.

We’re thinking about a range of ideas, from just being there

So my questions to the group are, who’s going?

Who would support OGC activities with data, services, clients?

Any other ideas we should consider?

I have not been in touch with them lately, but someone really needs to. I think having an interoperability demo-fest would be a great way for us to engage with each other. I’m seeing this opportunity forming more and more and is something I think OSGeo + OGC can really take the lead on.

Aside from that I really want to follow up with our opportunities with Where 2.0 organisers directly, but have been too swamped. Anyone else out there who would like to coordinate it? I have some ideas, but not much time at present to be effective in making them happen.

I’ve been working on Location Intelligence - need to finalise some more speaker titles, etc. and decide if we want to use the half day workshop spot we have and to hussle people to help at booth.

Autodesk will donate booth space but we need to figure out budgets, etc. so we can get new booth material/posters, etc. through OSGeo funds.

I think we’re looking pretty good for this event so far with the work I’ve done, but we need booth stuff and volunteer rallying mainly.

Great - I'd really like to see if between Chris and Bob we could have a session that shows some interoperability between GeoServer and MapGuide. Any great ideas come to mind? Of course, I'm sure with the few hours you have each of you could fill it up individually - but I think showing interoperability will go a long ways.

Could do something like set up a PostGIS database, configure GeoServer and MapGuide to both use it. Then make a MapGuide front-end, an openlayers front-end for GeoServer. Add in MapGuide WMS to openlayers. Then show off editing through MapGuide and editing on uDig to GeoServer WFS, and how it edits the same backend... And can also throw in MapBuilder or MapBender WFS-T if there's time...

Chris,
That would be really cool. It would have been nice if we had set this up at the Australian Linux Conference - and none of us had a full understanding of all the applications.

If you do set this up, could you please leave tracks so someone else can set it up again next time.
Maybe a wiki page with details of what you did, or possibly set up a zip file of all the installed applications.
Oh - and if you go that far, why don't you kick off the OS Geo Stack packaging project.

Great - I'd really like to see if between Chris and Bob we could have a session that shows some interoperability between GeoServer and MapGuide. Any great ideas come to mind? Of course, I'm sure with the few hours you have each of you could fill it up individually - but I think showing interoperability will go a long ways.

I think we should definitely use the half day workshop spot. I can do
GeoServer stuff really easily since we already have that all written
out. And I'm happy to volunteer at the booth.

Autodesk will donate booth space but we need to figure out budgets,

etc.

so we can get new booth material/posters, etc. through OSGeo funds.

I think we're looking pretty good for this event so far with the work
I've done, but we need booth stuff and volunteer rallying mainly.

I have not been in touch with them lately, but someone really
needs to. I think having an interoperability demo-fest would be

a

great way for us to engage with each other. I'm seeing this
opportunity forming more and more and is something I think OSGeo

+

OGC can really take the lead on.

Aside from that I really want to follow up with our opportunities
with Where 2.0 organisers directly, but have been too swamped.
Anyone else out there who would like to coordinate it? I have
some ideas, but not much time at present to be effective in

making

    them happen.

We need this for FOSS4G as well... if we can get something like this together, we can be the leaders in interoperability demos, I'm sure
