[Viscom-dev] PR for Canadian Geodata?

dear VisCom,

LinkedIn.com keeps trying to suggest i apply for Marketing jobs.
Perhaps i am missing a vocation! So i have resubscribed to the VisCom
mailing list after long absence. Hello again.

Topmost in mind right now, is how great it would be to send a press
release about the wonderful things being done with open access
Canadian geodata. The glossy Integration Showcase. The precedent
for open civic information that Canada is helping set for the world.
I imagine it would go something like this:

=head= Eye-catching Title

=p1= Concise explanation, brief quote from someone at GeoConnexions

=p2-p4= Context of FOSS4G, quote from someone at OSGeo, more details

=p5= Links to shiny demo, PR Contact details
          -30-

What i'd need to make this happen:
1/ Someone at GeoConnexions prepared to offer a nice quote
2/ Help with copyediting from someone who knows the form
3/ A mechanism for getting the PR out into some press networks
(I have an old ORA list of tech-interest journo contacts in Europe,
though some of them may be out of date now...)

What are the FOSS4G2007 organisers planning, if anything, in the way
of press release promotion, and how would this fit with their
schedule? This would be my main concern, about spam/overlap.

Feedback appreciated,

jo

dear jo-

The process is documented reasonably well:
  http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Press_Release_Process

I could handle #2 for you, and #3 is just a matter of spending some time
with the several email/web submission contacts listed on that page.

(PS- I think this is a fine idea; I know I still too often think of just
the "software" as something to be hyped/demo'd. The Canadians have good
data and enlightened policies, and since we've all going to be actually
IN Canada it all makes for happy happy synergythingies.)

Thanks very much!

It needs a legal review? This sort of thing has to go past the Board?
Eek! But, yes it is important to have proper review for statements
going out "in the name of" OSGeo.

I suppose i shall draft something, consult with Dave Patton and Justin
D'Oliveira and others working on the shiny showcase angle, and get
back to this process bit

cheers,

Folks,

Speaking of which, i've quite "fallen down" with my attempt to issue a
Service Provider Directory press release. Michael has some good suggestions
but they were a bit overwhelming to my feeble self.

Would anyone be willing to make a major editing pass over this? Please?

I don't think we've ever actually legally vetted anything, but a nod
from the board is always a good idea.

OK, I did some edits -- not much, but I think it flows a bit better now.

Two pieces of it yet to be finished are marked in BOLD: getting a good
juicy quote from someone, and listing a few canonical types of services
offered.

Feel free to hack away further...
