[Viscom-dev] Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OsGeo Matrix Feature

Hey VisComm, John Roberts here has been working on an Feature Matrix for Open Source Web Servers (MapServer, GeoServer, Deegree, and MapGuide). It mostly focuses on OWS implementations. It's a part of his thesis, but he's more than happy to share it for all. I was thinking it'd be great if he could make it a wiki that we could update in the future. He was also contemplating doing a more modest one for clients as well.

So the question is, would OSGeo be ok with putting this somewhere on our wiki? We've talked about it in the past and this could be a great start.

And if so, where in the wiki should it live? Under viscomm? Somewhere else?

thanks,

Chris

Yes, this is something that has come up before, e.g. at conferences. It
is on our (VisCom's) list of things to do.

Yummy!

If the amount of content we're looking at is of reasonable size, then I
don't see a problem with just glomming it into the current Wiki
somewhere. For extra credit, maybe use a prefix like "OWS_Servers_" to
help namespace the pages a bit. And if it all gets too big, we can
always fork it off somewhere else.

John, how soon will you be done?

Dear Michael/All

I have to finish my dissertation by May, therefore all will be completed by
then.

I have completed most of the dissertation that corresponds to the OWS
specifications and Matrix feature and I have sent the relevant sections to
the relevant mailing lists (GeoServer, MapServer, Deegree, MapGuide OS,
MapBender, MapBuilder, with OpenLayers yet to be done) for their comments.

Therefore if you were happy for me to go ahead, I would really want to start
as soon as possible. It would be a big advantage for me as people would
probably find it more convenient to go to a wiki and make amendments and
comments as opposed to me sending them a word document.

I can send you the current draft as a word document if you would like to see
it. If it is not appropriate for attachments to be used on the discussion
list, please ask me to send it to you directly.

Kind Regards

John Roberts

John-

Why don't you send a copy of the Word doc to me and perhaps
tylermitchell@shaw.ca, and then we can take a look and suggest how best
to proceed.
