Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] Update on the Free GIS Book

I’ve added a post to the OpenJUMP Blog detailing my recent and upcoming work on the Free GIS Book. You can read the blog post here:
http://openjump.blogspot.com/

I’d like to know if anyone can provide me a source of information about the use of RADAR and other technology to measure distances in cartography and geodesy applications. I mention this briefly in my section of the Mapping Math chapter on “Measuring Distances”, but I don’t know very much about it and would like to do some research to make sure what I’m saying is correct.

I’d also like to start laying out a print version of the chapter, as I’m accumlating what will be at least a few pages of material. I can start on a layout for a hard copy version of the Free GIS Book, but I’d like to get some input from the OSGeo “branding” folks if possible.

As always, I welcome comments and suggestions on the chapter material.

Thanks,

Landon (A.K.A. - The Sunburned Surveyor)

Michael,

I want to start setting up a PDF version of the Free GIS Book chapter I am working on in Scribus. Is there a place where I can get the OSGeo logo in digital format? Does the OSGeo have a set of preferred colors and fonts types?

Thanks,

Landon

Landon,
Have a peek at:
http://www.osgeo.org/visibility for logos, etc. Stick with the same colours as the logo uses and you can’t go wrong. We don’t have preferred font that I know of.

Sure we do: Bitstream Vera (open source font). It’s defined in the branding guide. Of course, the branding guide also says that you can buy copies of this font at fontshop.com (you can’t)

Vera is a bit limited in international character support; DejaVu (a Vera derivative) does a better job in many cases, and we may want to consider officially supporting this font in preference to Vera at some point:

Keep in mind that fonts for logos & brochures & stuff are often not appropriate fonts for large amounts of text, e.g. a book… (that said, any decent serif font is probably okay)
