Dear community,

I have a web application for which i try to add the functionality that when a user clicks on a layer’s feature, a table is shown with all the features (and their attributes) that at least (partially) overlap with the clicked feature. Because I also want to generate derived attributes like (the intersection geometry and area) I could not do it with the standard spatial filters.

My workflow:

I created a function in my postgis database that looks like this:

I added backslashes to escape all the ‘,‘ in the wkt geometry as was described in the user manual.

As long as the XML body remains relatively small it works well. But as soon as the xml body reaches around 8000 characters due to a more complex geometry. I obtain the following error in the request response:

It looks like the xml body is being cut off somewhere. I think that it is a bug, so could this be resolved? If anyone knows a work around I would also be happy to hear about it.

That doesn’t look like an XML post body to me, there should be no need to escape the commas in an XML file, if you are trying to make a GET request with that length of URL at the end then technically that is valid in practice most clients and servers impose a limit (as you have found at 8000), so the parameter is truncated before it gets to GeoServer.

The backslashes are needed for GET and POST requests to escape the commas of the wkt coordinates as is written in the official geoserver documentation. without them it does never work. when I add them it only works until the geometries reach around 8000 characters.

I am going to add some info here. Apologies if it is inappropriate, feel free to delete this post.

I’ve ran into something very similar a few years ago. Notice this code:

It does 1 read request, with at most XML_LOOKAHEAD=8192 chars, when an XML POST request is done. In my case, the POST was in 2 different IP packets so needed 2 reads. But in the same way, if >8K is posted, this will also cut it off. I managed to work around it for my use case.

There is some code in there to set a bigger value for the lookahead. I did not test this, but presumably adding something like -DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536 to the front of the command line might activate it. Maybe @Valentin can try to activate it and see if it works around his problem?

If you want me to, I can spend some time writing a patch to fully read the buffer. This means the max XML POST buffer size will become the limit allowed by tomcat etc… The fix is relatively straightforward: do a loop around the read and use a StringReader to make the buffer dynamically sized. The main problem will be writing a unit test triggering this - I haven’t looked into it, so I am open for suggestions.

Out of curiosity, could you point out the page where that escaping is documented? Is it this SQL Views — GeoServer 2.28.0 User Manual?

I will give a try to DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536. I will keep you posted about if it worked.

So I’ve tried your suggestion of XML_LOOKAHEAD and when i do it on my geoserver running with jetty on localhost it works. But in production I use tomcat and when I edit catalina.sh to include the JAVA_OPTS with -DXML_LOOKAHEAD it does not work. It looks like tomcat is picking up the variable but that it does not pass it to geoserver when i restart tomcat. I don’t really understand why this happens.

@Valentin Maybe it should be added to CATALINA_OPTS?
But if it affects jetty, this means we’ve more or less understood what causes this behaviour. And if I manage to get it fixed at the source, I can remove one of my local workarounds :slight_smile:

So @ianturton I would be gratefull if you could comment on me providing a PR for GEOS-10509 cfr my post here above?

Will do, but can’t yet provide a timing for delivery.

  • I was planning on using the existing GEOS-10509 ticket and not create a new one.
  • As this is the second PR in a short while and this will be >1line, we might want the CLA. I am employed at vliz.be , and the geoserver tasks are part of emodnet biology. I understood they both already entered a CLA into osgeo, and there is some kind of partnership in place. Is this good enough, or do you want me or my employer to give a new one?

When I install GeoServer locally on my pc with jetty and then open a shell with the following commands:

set JAVA_OPTS="-DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

and then start GeoServer with startup.bat,

GeoServer correctly picks up the parameter and works properly.

So far, I have not been able to reproduce the same fix on my linux server where geoserver is installed with Tomcat.

What I have changed:

Via systemctl edit tomcat, I added the following:

[Service]
Environment="CATALINA_OPTS=-DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

[Service]
Environment="JAVA_OPTS=-DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

In catalina.sh, I added the following at the top of the file:

JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

CATALINA_OPTS="$CATALINA_OPTS -DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

In the same folder as catalina.sh, I created a new file setenv.sh with the following content:

export JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"
export CATALINA_OPTS="$CATALINA_OPTS -DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"
export XML_LOOKAHEAD=65536

In setclasspath.sh, I added the following:

CATALINA_OPTS="-DXML_LOOKAHEAD=65536"

In GeoServer’s web.xml, I added the following:

<context-param>
    <param-name>XML_LOOKAHEAD</param-name>
    <param-value>65536</param-value>
</context-param>

None of the above seems to work. Does anyone have an idea why? Does anyone have a suggestion for a fix?
